ASRM Course Updates

Hello Students in Actuarial Science,
As the Fall 2021 term comes to an end, we wanted to emphasize the importance of some of the course offerings for Spring 2022. While many of you may have already completed your course registration, the information below may be of interest to some of you:
ASRM 472
For those students who are studying for SOA/CAS exams, ASRM 472 prepares students for a very significant portion of SOA Exam LTAM and covers core actuarial mathematics that will be the foundation for application in several actuarial career streams. With the coming changes to the SOA curriculum, the course material will be also relevant for the new FAM and ALTAM exam components.
We have observed that some students may be considering ASRM 409 instead of ASRM 472. The course material in ASRM 409 covers approximately 25% of the CAS MAS-I exam and some concepts in STAM such as the poisson process and aggregate compound models. It also covers some concepts in LTAM such as homogeneous/non- homogenous Markov Chain used in multi-state models. Comparatively, ASRM 472 covers the most critical components of the existing LTAM exam and the future ALTAM exam.
ASRM 410
Similarly, students who are studying for SOA/CAS exams, ASRM 410 will prepare students for exam IFM/3F in 2022, with the last sitting in November 2022 before the transition to the new curriculum. If you can pass exam IFM, you will not need to take the new Exam ATPA (Advanced Topics in Predictive Analytics) that will come into effect after the transition. The first offering of Exam ATPA will be in June 2022.
Our suggestion is that you prepare for Exam IFM as early as possible unless you want to take Exam ATPA instead. The ATPA exam is expected to be more programming focused. Keep in mind that the IFM exam is much more well established than the new exams. There are already more readily available study materials to prepare for this exam, e.g. study manuals, question banks, online exam prep programs, etc. Most new exams introduced by the SOA are advanced levels of existing exams, which we expect may have a higher level of difficulty compared to the exams being removed. We want students to be aware and understand the risks of forgoing the opportunity to prepare for and pass a well-established exam.
One additional note about ASRM 410 for ASRM students interested in concepts of financial mathematic: for students completing the MS program, the restriction on receiving credit for only one of ASRM 410 or ASRM 510 has been removed, so now students can receive degree credit for both courses.
Feel free to reach out to the Actuarial Science Office if you have any questions.
Regards
Paul

Milliman x Northwestern Mutual Actuarial Career Day: Save the Date

Good Morning Students in Actuarial Science,

The Milliman Milwaukee and Chicago offices will be hosting a virtual Actuarial Career Day event for undergraduate and graduate students on Thursday, January 6, 2022. This is an all-day event that will feature educational topics and case studies designed to help students learn more about actuarial science. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

Actuarial Career Day – Save the Date – 2022

Curriculum Update

Hello Graduate Students in Actuarial Science,

We wanted to clarify a couple of items related to the course curriculum:

ASRM 451 v.s. ASRM 499 Section GR

We have had some requests from students to enroll in ASRM 451 – Basics of Statistical Learning. This course is cross listed as Stat 432 in the Department of Statistics. Students in ASRM attempting to register for this course have been restricted with the flag “Course Closed”. Since the course belongs to the Department of Statistics, priority will be given to Statistics students and will require an approval to allow ASRM students to enroll in this class.

We are recommending that ASRM students in the MS program enroll in ASRM 499, Section GR rather than ASRM 451, for the following reasons:

  • This course is designed for ASRM students and there will not be any restriction from registering for ASRM students
  • This course will adequately prepare students for Exam MASII/SRM

University-Earned Credit (UEC) Program

There continues to be questions and inquiries from the students regarding the pending participation in the University-Earned Credit (UEC) program from the SOA. We wanted to confirm at this time where we are in this process, and what it means for the students as they navigate through their courses and potentially plan for the implementation of this program.

At the present time, the SOA has not issued any waiver for exams. An application has been submitted to the SOA for the pending UEC program, whereby several exams may be eligible for exemption based on the listed qualifying criteria. We are expecting a response to our application in the Spring, including which courses in our curriculum could be eligible for SOA course exemption.

The response from the SOA will also clarify how the UEC program will be administered. At the present time, any ASRM courses taken this term or in the Spring 2022 term will still require the student to complete the corresponding SOA exam. Students may consider restructuring their course selection in consideration of the impact of UEC accreditation, however, the earliest that a student could obtain UEC credit would be Fall 2022. We cannot make a guarantee on this timetable until we receive a response from the SOA on our application, including which courses would be eligible for the program, and what changes we will need to make to the curriculum and course delivery to be compliant with the criteria.

We have no further information at this point, but we will do our best to share any news with the students as it comes in. If you are interested in detailed information on the UEC program, please refer to the link below from the SOA webpage.
