# math 285: the week of september 8

Review Chapter 1.6, 2.2 of the textbook (Edwards and Penney). Listen to the video lectures.

Additional reading (highly recommended!): chapter 1 of Ordinary differential equations : a practical guide by
Bernd J. Schroers (CUP, 2011).

Homework (due by Monday, 9.17):

1. Reduce the equation to a linear one and solve:
• $y’+2y=y^2e^{x}$
(use $$u=1/y$$);
• $(2e^y-x)y’=1$
(swap unknown function and independent variable).
2. Solve
$\frac{y}{x}dx+(y^3+\ln(x))dy=0.$
3. Solve (reducing to a 1-st order differential equation)
$y”=e^y.$

I seem to be struggling with some of these things. I’d like to meet with you outside of class, but I can’t make your office hours tomorrow because of the engineering expo. Is there any other time that I could get some help?

Could you please make this homework available to submit on Compass2g?
