To center our work, WAES has developed a set of key concepts surrounding writing instruction in STEM fields. These concepts inform our approach to mentoring, collaboration, workshops, and research. The concepts emerge from writing studies, but throughout our work they have been further shaped and informed by transdisciplinary collaborations with STEM faculty and practitioners.
We’ve listed a selection of these concepts below, along with background information and potential starting points you might draw on to begin incorporating them into STEM coursework. In addition, we’ve included resources and research that informs our approach, which you might explore when developing new pedagogies, assignments, and curricula. As this is just a general overview and there are many concerns to keep in mind when implementing new instructional strategies, please reach out to our team if you have further questions or would like to work with us as you consider these tools.
