Sign up here for experiments

Sign-up and Cancellation policy

Below, you will see a list of available experiments, with a link to a sign-up website and/or an email contact.  The sign-up link will have a calendar with available times for each study. If there is only an email contact provided, you will need to email the researcher in charge to schedule a time for your experiment.

For cancellations, you can cancel via the sign-up website for your timeslot up to 24 hours in advance of your sign-up. Your confirmation email should give you a link to your sign-up slot. If you need to cancel your sign-up for an experiment you scheduled with the researcher, please email the researcher at least 24 hours prior to the start of your study.

The Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism Lab in our department also recruits participants.  Their sign-up page can be found here.

If you attempt to cancel or reschedule your sign-up less than 24 hours before your time slot, or if you fail to show up for your sign-up, you will be allowed to reschedule once. If you cancel with less than 24 hour notice or no-show again, your future sign-ups will be cancelled by the researcher.

Additionally, if you are non-cooperative, disruptive, or purposely do not follow instructions during the experiment, you will be dismissed from the session and will not receive credit for the study.

If you do not meet the stated eligibility requirements for a study, you will be dismissed and not receive credit for the study.

You must be at least 18 years old to participate in research.

If you have questions about a study or your eligibility to participate in a study, please email the ELP Lab.

About Brainwave Measurements

Some of our studies listed below involve measuring people’s naturally-occurring brainwaves non-invasively. If a study involves brainwave measurement, it will say so; otherwise, the study does not involve brainwave measurements.

To measure people’s brainwaves, we use a technique called electroencephalography. In short, your brain cells communicate with each other using electro-chemical signals. We can measure those signals with sensors placed on your head. The sensors sit in an elastic cap, like a swimming cap. They sit passively and measure the electrical activity coming from your brainThis technique is completely safe and non-invasive. We also can’t see what you’re thinking during the experiment, so you don’t need to worry about that. We simply see wiggly lines. However, we do use a small amount of water-based gel in the sensors to make a bridge between your skin and the sensor. The gel washes out easily, though your hair might be a bit sticky in some spots after the study. If you are concerned about this, we recommend bringing a baseball cap to wear after the experiment.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email the lab assistant.

CURRENT STUDIES

ATV

This is a paid ERP study for right-handed native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. During the study, you will listen to some Chinese sentences while your naturally occurring brainwaves are recorded. The study will last around 2-3 hours, and you will receive $20/hr.

This experiment will require you to be in close contact with the researcher for up to 30 minutes as the researcher applies the electrode cap to your head. This contact is similar to what occurs at a hair salon or barber shop. The researcher will take all possible precautions to protect yours and their health in this time.

In order to participate in this experiment, you must wear a mask and have building access granted through the Safer Illinois App or otherwise. Also please be sure that you are not experiencing any COVID symptoms.

FORTUNE TELLER

This is a paid/for-credit ERP study for right-handed native speakers of American English. During the study, you will read some sentences while your naturally occurring brainwaves are recorded. The study will last around 2 hours, and you will receive 2 course credits or $20.
