Stockholm Summer Arctic Program

SAO-LAS: Stockholm Summer Arctic Program: Application Deadline extended to March 15th!
  
This summer, discover how melting glaciers and sea ice are altering one of the world’s great wildernesses and changing the lives of Nordic and indigenous people. In this intensive five-week program, learn about issues related to climate change and human presence in the Arctic through interdisciplinary perspectives. Industrial heritage studies with relevance to heritage management will be another focus of the program. 

University of Illinois students will participate with students from KTH-Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, and will spend two weeks in the Arctic. Field site locations include Northern Sweden, Kiruna, and the Swedish mountains at the Tarfala and Abisko Research Stations.

6 Hours of pre-approved credit available as one of the following cross-listings: GLBL 386, SCAN 386, or SESE 386

ACES 298: Marketing and Cultural Economy of Food as Heritage *all majors welcome
Location: Shropshire, England

Program Summary: This program explores an entire region – the most rural, beautiful, and sparsely populated of England. We will study market towns, farms, breweries, pubs, tea rooms, restaurants and food stores, as well as Ironbridge Gorge (home of the Industrial Revolution which, among other achievements, gave us cast iron cookware that revolutionized the kitchen) and the nearby multicultural metropolis of Birmingham where the Cadbury family established its chocolate empire. Includes pre and post-departure coursework on campus.

Global Studies Courses Abroad Spring/Summer 2014

EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN ANDEAN ECUADOR (GLBL 298) Ecuador
 
This newly expanded course for UIUC undergraduates offers 6 weeks in Ecuador over the summer and 6 credit hours awarded in the spring. The course includes theoretical explorations of development and education, an ethnographic field school, and service learning abroad. The course begins in the second half of the spring semester with a theoretical and practical orientation led by Prof. Kate Grim-Feinberg, who specializes in elementary education in the Andes. While abroad, students engage in service learning by creating and conducting a month-long summer enrichment experience for children in the small, lower income community of Lumbisí, just outside of Quito. Students also conduct ethnographic inquiry projects guided by anthropologist Julie Williams, professor at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. Students spend 6 weeks in Lumbisí and live with families in the community. Some knowledge of Spanish is highly recommended but not required. VIENNA, AUSTRIA May 18-June 15 first summer session
 
 Study where it all started!
This summer the political science department will once again offer a study abroad course in Vienna with Prof. Vasquez. This year it is a new course–PS 300: World War I and International Relations Theory in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of World War I. The course counts as an upper-level course in the major and will culminate in a two-day undergraduate research conference in Salzburg at the Schloss Leopoldskron, where the Sound of Music was filmed (see below). The course will be given in the first summer session May 18-June 15 in Austria. Two long weekends provide an opportunity to travel in Europe. Since  2014 is the 100th Anniversary of World War I; I am giving a course on:

PS 300 Special Topics: World War I and International Relations Theory

Instructor, John Vasquez

An analysis of the outbreak and spread of World War I in light of international relations theory and research from the field of peace science. Emphasis is placed on the role of alliances, rivalry, repeated crises, arms races, and territorial disputes and how these affected decision making in individual countries. Students prepare a paper using recent data and historical information.

In this intensive five-week program – for science and non-science students – discover how climate change is altering one of the world’s great wildernesses and then conduct research that will help map a sustainable future for the Arctic. UIUC students participate together with students from Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The first part of the program will take place in Stockholm.  This year’s field sites will be located in Northern Sweden, with time spent in Kiruna, followed a stay in the Swedish mountains at the Tarfala Research Station, and ending with a stay at the Abisko Research Station near Lake Torne Träsk.  
 
Applicants must have junior status or consent of the instructor.
