Learning in Community Showcase Invitation and Spring’15 Service-Learning Courses

Are you looking for an engaging class? Interested in real-life projects, service-learning, teamwork and leadership experience?
Register for Spring ’15 ENG 315: Learning in Community (LINC) courses (3 credit hours) – open to all majors and all levels.
You can use your time at Illinois to learn more AND make your mark in the community! Earn 3 credits in ENG 315: Learning in Community and build your skills while working in interdisciplinary teams on real projects with community partners. You’ll analyze needs, solve problems, and enhance communication, teamwork, and writing skills.

Conflict Resolution Training Opportunity – Now Accepting Applications for Spring!

Alternative Conflict Resolution Services in the Office for Student Conflict Resolution is currently accepting Spring 2015 applications for the Conflict Resolution Training Program! 
 
Please share this opportunity with your undergraduate and graduate students.  The program introduces the participants to mediation and other alternative conflict resolution concepts and is focused on developing conflict resolution skills to help them address conflict they may encounter in the future.  It can be particularly helpful to students in leadership positions!  Students who have participated have mentioned that the training helped in personal and professional settings.  One student came back to tell us that the program came up in her job interviews and helped her get an internship.  Practice scenarios include a variety of situations, including roommate, personal, organizational, and work conflict.  Students who complete this program will receive a certificate of completion and gain a skill to share on their resume.

Call for Applications: Spring 2015 LINC Project Managers
For Graduate Students and Advanced Undergraduate Students 
Consider this significant opportunity to acquire training and experience in project management and classroom facilitation while leading a real project of importance to a nonprofit community partner! Positions are available to co-manage a LINC-Learning in Community section (ENG 315) with interdisciplinary projects related to social and environmental issues, engineering and technical problems, education, community health, and international development. LINC students have built bridges, produced marketing campaigns, improved water systems, developed youth programs, designed rain gardens, and lots more!
Project Managers earn 4 credit hours for ENG 598: Applied Project Management and facilitate the regularly scheduled ENG 315 sessions for one of the projects. They manage the project, participate in a weekly professional development course where they learn about service-learning and managing projects in community-based settings, coordinate communications with the partner, and assess student work. Project Managers will receive preparation for their leadership roles during a pre-semester training on January 14-16. 
LINC Project Managers will gain/learn

 

  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in innovative teaching techniques
  • Enhanced skills in communication, professional writing, leading multi-disciplinary teams, problem-solving, conflict resolution, evaluation, organizing and prioritizing tasks, and time management
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in applied project management
  • Experience working with diverse students, partners, and project stakeholders in authentic, community-based contexts
  • Satisfaction in guiding students to be socially responsible citizens
  • A sense of accomplishment in making a meaningful impact in the community and in the lives of students

Jack Bowsher: Rising to the Executive Ranks

See the exciting opportunity this week to learn from a real pro, Jack Bowsher! After a brief career in accounting and obtaining an MBA from the University of Chicago, Jack joined IBM as a sales trainee. He rose through the ranks to become the Director of Management Development and later IBM Director of Education and Training. In that position he was responsible for training over 400,000 employees and millions of customer personnel with a budget of $900 million. Jack is the author of four books and had several years as a consultant after he retired from IBM. Learn from Jack what it takes to rise from an entry level position to the executive ranks. Learning in Community (LINC)

Dear Students,
Do you have room available in your schedule? Are you still looking for a course to add but are worried about catching-up?
Learning in Community (LINC) is still accepting students in our ENG 315: Learning in Community course (3 credits). We will work with you to catch you up. LINC is an interdisciplinary, inquiry-guided service-learning course. It is open to all students, all levels with no pre-requisites. Students will join one of several small teams to work on community-based projects. We need motivated, hard-working students to join existing teams. Please consider becoming part of LINC—you will learn A LOT and really make a difference with our Community Partners!  Interested students can enroll in the following sections – WSB, HKC and OKO. In order to enroll please contact Shikhank Sharma (sharma24@illinois.edu) as soon as possible to discuss project options and to get connected to the Project Managers.  More information about LINC can be found at www.linc.illinois.edu.
Available projects include:
ENG 315, WSB – Walking School Bus Program, Urbana School District.Projects related to public health, youth education, and urban planning.
Work on projects that help the Walking School Bus Program expand and improve their program. Students will help start a Walking School Bus program at Prairie Elementary School along with participating and learning more about the currently existing program at Leal Elementary School.
You will also have the opportunity to run a route of the walking school bus for children.
 
ENG 315, HKC – His Kid’s Closet.Projects related to nonprofit development and poverty issues and children.
Work on projects that help His Kid’s Closet expand the number of children in need who receive free clothing, and develop organizational structures and processes to enhance services and can be replicated in other communities.
The vision for His Kid’s Closet is to grow into services other than just kids’ clothing as well as be present in the poorest cities all over the country. This is a unique opportunity for students to be a part of something that will benefit people in need in the community.
 
ENG 315, OKO – Old King’s Orchard Community Center and KCPA Office of Engagement.Projects related to community development, youth programs, and arts engagement.
Old King’s Orchard Community Center and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts are working together to provide a safe, healthy environment to youth and families in inner-city Decatur through quality programs and services. Work on projects related to arts programming, community gardening, youth programs, education, and more!
