LAS 199 PPD ‘Rethinking Education: An Action Research Project on what Liberal Education Means for a 21st Century Student’

Spring 2015 — 3 Credit Hours

Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 4:50 pm

Course Instructor: Dr. Nicole Lamers

Email: lamers@illinois.edu

This research-based experience will focus on student exploration of the purpose and meaning of a Liberal Arts Education — where we have been — where we are now – and to better inform the directions we should consider taking into the future.

We will explore multiple related topics, including: learning styles, professional development, intercultural and interpersonal development, living in a world of BIG data, general education and its goals and beyond.

Students will work in groups on a self-defined, but guided research project that will result in specific policy recommendations which will be presented to a group of administrators and faculty members at the end of the semester.

This course will be a part of the Ethnography of the University Initiative, which means all students will be eligible to apply to present at the EUI Research Conference. Students will also be encouraged to submit to the campus-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Due to limited spaces, this course is by application only, please follow this link to apply: https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/5469191.
