Thanks for sharing information on the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics’ programs  in Sierra Leone with interested students. Sophomores through seniors with GPAs of 2.75+ from all majors are eligible to participate.

Global Health, Nutrition, Water, & Sanitation
Learning from experience is at the heart of our semester-long program in Sierra Leone. Explore the complexities of global health and nutrition through coursework, program excursions, and an internship. The social and economic realities of those in Sierra Leone are closely intertwined with issues of public health, proper nutrition, access to water, and sanitation. This program puts you in direct contact with those realities and with the people working to address them. The program links theory with critical analysis and practical experiences.

This program is part of a long-standing, collaborative partnership between the University of Illinois and Njala University. Courses are co-taught by University of Illinois and Njala faculty. Some classes will include Njala’s honors students. Students in this exxperiential learning program complete a service-learning project and a full-time internship that correspond with the program’s theme. Courses in the semester program have been pre-approved for Ilinois credit hours.

International Development & Agribusiness Program (IDAP)
Experiential learning is at the core of this program. IDAP puts you indirect contact with the social and economic realities of agricultural communities and the complex issues involved in agribusiness, productivity, and trade in Sub-Saharan Africa. Through coursework, field trips, internships, and service-learning, this semester-long program builds a continual dialogue between hands-on experiences and theoretical and critical analysis.

The program works in conjunction with Njala University’s Agribusiness Management program and offers joint classes and projects taught by both Illinois and Njala faculty. Courses in IDAP are taught in English and have been pre-approved for Illinois credit hours.

Information sessions on the programs in Sierra Leone will be held January 30 at 4 p.m. in 1020 Lincoln Hall.
