The SEC is typically offered during the Spring semester.

The class is about 7 to 8 weeks long and meets from Monday through Thursday for about two hours each day (4PM – 5:50PM). The exact starting dates for the SEC varies from semester to semester.

Testing for the SEC usually begins about a month before the SEC starts.

Will the SEC improve my academic English skills?

Improving academic English skills (e.g., TOEFL test scores, writing, etc.) is not the goal of the SEC. The SEC is focused on everyday conversation skills for low-intermediate English speakers.

What other opportunities are there for improving my English?

Please consult the Other ESL Resources page for a list of paid and free opportunities for learning and practicing English in the Champaign-Urbana community.

Is there a waiting list for the SEC?

Unfortunately, there is no waiting list for the SEC. If you were not admitted into the SEC and would like to apply again, you must sign up again (and take the test again) the next semester.

I’ve already taken the SEC; can I take the class again?

If you have already taken the SEC before, you cannot apply to take the class again.
