Message from the President

During what are usually the coldest weeks of winter, a time when snow is covering dirt that has been frozen for weeks, one tiny flower shoots through the ground to bring signs that Spring is on the way. Commonly known as Snowdrops, these little jewels appear as optimistic signs that the harsh winter weather is coming to an end. They are a wonderful sight and foster hope as they are reminders that each cycle has a beginning and an ending. Let’s enjoy the final days of winter knowing that the beginning of Spring is on its way!

Attendees at February’s luncheon learned more about each other during a ‘get-to-know-you’ activity. Secretariat members learned little known facts about each other as they shared useful tidbits about their family life, specific hobbies, and past and future travel destinations.

The March luncheon will be held at the Chez Family Foundation Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education.  Our speaker will be Interim Director Nick Osborne. He will tell us about the Center and luncheon attendees will also have the opportunity to take a brief tour of this beautiful state-of-the-art facility. Be sure to RSVP today for the luncheon. Registration details are below in the Programs and Reservations section.

The application period for the Kathryn G. Hansen scholarship is coming to a close.  If you know of a high school senior preparing to enroll in college, be sure you share the information listed below in the Scholarship Committee’s section.  But do it quick – applications are due by March 7.

The Nominations and Elections Committee is accepting nominations for next year’s President Elect, Recording Secretary, and Treasurer positions.  These are not only important roles in Secretariat, but a great way to enhance someone’s professional portfolio.  I have personally enjoyed my time on the Secretariat Board and feel it has been very rewarding. It is an experience that has enhanced my personal communication skills and professional development while giving me the opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic group of individuals.  Further information and details about the nominating process are listed below in the Nominations and Elections Committee section.

Career Connections Committee’s next Brown Bag Luncheon will be at 12:05-12:55 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5 in the Lucy Ellis Lounge.  Sue Stewart and Tiy Goddard from the Center for Training and Professional Development will be the speakers.  More details about this event are below in the Career Connections Committee’s section.

Looking ahead, the April luncheon will feature the naming of this year’s Office Professional of the Year and the guest speaker will be Helen Coleman, Director of Capital Programs in Facilities and Services.

Do you have a couple of ideas or know of a professional development event in the area that you would like to share with us? Comments and suggestions for improving the opportunities through Secretariat are always welcome through our email address,

Enjoy these final days of winter and I look forward to seeing you at this month’s luncheon!
