Tutoring at Urbana Middle School

NOTE: Remember, I do not set up tutoring. I simply provide you with ways to access opportunities. It is your responsibility to follow through and complete the required 50 hours.

Hello students!

Included is the information you need to apply for academic tutoring slots at Urbana Middle School for Fall 2012. This school offers wonderful tutoring experiences and is well-organized and supervised.  You can go to http://education.illinois.edu/tutoring/schools to find Urbana Middle School’s application for tutoring along with other information.

Steps toward signing up for tutoring at Urbana Middle School (UMS):

Fingerprinting: Urbana requires that you get fingerprinted before you tutor in the school.  The phone number for setting up the fingerprinting appointment is found in the link above.  You will need to call to set up the fingerprinting.   Call NOW to set up the appointment to avoid delay in starting to tutor.

*NOTE: According to Barbara Linder, the tutoring coordinator, students who were fingerprinted for Urbana last year do not have to be fingerprinted again, but should note on their application that they were previously fingerprinted for Urbana.

  1. Application to UMS: You will want to fill out the application by going to the above link and submit the application digitally to Barbara Linder at blinder@usd116.org.  A typed signature is acceptable. Please contact her (217-337-0853), if you have questions about the application or tutoring at Urbana Middle School. Barbara is the Volunteer Coordinator for this location.
  2. Attend an orientation: You can email Barbara Linder to register for the required orientation which will be Wednesday, September 12th at 103 Mumford Hall.
  3. Figure out where you are going!: UMS is located at 1201 S. Vine, Urbana, making it an ideal volunteer location for U of I students.  It is accessible by the Green bus line (10 minutes from the Union).  It’s also an easy walk or bike ride from the east side of campus, as UMS is about 10 blocks due east of McKinley Health Center.
  4. Figure out the times of tutoring: UMS utilizes volunteer tutors during the school day (8:45-3:45) and during its after school program.  Tutors can choose to work one-on-one with the same student each time or to serve as a classroom aide and assist the teacher with small groups of students as needed.  UMS asks for a minimum of a once a week commitment (minimum of 1 hour/class period).   Urbana School District #116 requires a minimum of 10 hr/semester commitment.

Note: Students who tutored last year at UMS do not have to wait until the end of September to start. Barbara can get them started early in the month.
