Embracing Wellness and Professional Fulfillment:  Ensuring the Future of Healthcare

Welcome to the 17th Annual Research Day of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign!

We look forward to sharing outstanding presentations and posters showcasing the breadth, depth, and vibrancy of the ongoing research and scholarly activities throughout our College. In addition, we celebrate people: our students and faculty, residents, and the collaborative efforts they demonstrate with each other, our clinical partners and colleagues across the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus and beyond, to further translational efforts to benefit patients. We are also pleased to welcome participation this year from the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine.  This year’s theme, Embracing Wellness and Professional Fulfillment: Ensuring the Future of Healthcare, is especially important and timely. It is increasingly clear that wellness as a path to professional fulfillment is crucial.  Excellence in healthcare depends on it, as does the pipeline of future healthcare professionals.

We are delighted to welcome this year’s keynote speaker Eileen Barrett, MD, MPH, FHM, FACP.  Dr. Barrett is a general internist in the Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, and the Director of Graduate Medical Education Wellness at the University of New Mexico.  She is the immediate past President of the New Mexico Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine, a Regent of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and serves on several national professional society committees including the ACP Physician Wellbeing and Professional Satisfaction Task Force.   Previously she served with the Indian Health Service in New Mexico providing care to the Navajo Nation for almost 10 years, and also volunteered in West Africa during the 2014 Ebola outbreak.

Michael Kuhlenschmidt, MD, Chair of this year’s event, is assembling an impressive agenda containing outstanding educational and inspiring sessions.  Dr. Kuhlenschmidt is an internal medicine specialist with Christie Clinic in Champaign, IL.  He is an alumnus and faculty member of the University of Illinois  College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Kuhlenschmidt also earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We thank him and the entire planning committee for their many hours of hard work.

We look forward to seeing you on March 8!
