The goal of cognitive radio technology is to enable users to reclaim bands that are assigned to, but unused by, primary users, thereby alleviating the spectrum congestion.  In the ReCognize project, we seek to design cognitive radio network protocols that not only alleviate spectrum congestion, but also enhance the reliability of the entire network, even in the presence of appliances suffering from Byzantine faults or even malicious adversaries.

Four immediate challenges ReCognize faces are:
1. Reliable spectrum sensing;
2. Reliable coordination between secondary users;
3. Reliable location service; and
4. Reliable medium access control.

The ReCognize project is also interested in other topics related to cognitive radio.
