Book Snakes Workshop, Wednesday, April 27th, 2016
Book Snakes – This workshop is a hands on session where participants learned to create book snakes. Book Snakes are simple weights made of cloth and various fillers. They are commonly used to hold books open to a specific page without damaging the pages. Each participant gets to create up to two Book Snakes that they can decorate however they wish.

Simple Repairs – This workshop includes a general introduction to simple book repairs as a method to extend the life of collection materials as well as a brief discussion on paper types and degradation. Topics covered include proper erasing techniques, simple paper mends, repairing tattered board corners, and reattaching loose pages. Each participant will also create a weight to be used during repairs and receive the tools necessary to complete these repairs

This session will cover best practices for serving special collections materials to patrons and handling in the reading room. Topics that will be covered include ergonomics, shelving, and transporting materials through work spaces. Handling considerations for bound volumes, boxes, over-sized flat paper, and photographs will be discussed.
