Save the Date for The First International Congress on Postharvest Loss Prevention

By: Kari Wozniak & Kevin Glauber, ADM Institute

Join the ADM Institute in forming a high-level, cross-sector global coalition at the First International Congress for PHL Prevention.

By 2050, we will need to feed billions more people using less natural resources. Though no less important, this is not an unfamiliar fact.

Another fact not unfamiliar is that each year 1/3 of all food is lost or wasted. That values at 1.3 billion tonnes of food, several billions more in dollars, and even gigatons more in greenhouse gas emissions.

Food loss and food waste is a serious problem that needs a global response.

Thanks to important work by various organizations worldwide, from the UN FAO’s SAVE FOOD Partnership to the EU’s FUSIONS to U.S. Food Waste Challenge, efforts are already underway.

The ADM Institute for the Prevention of Postharvest Loss aims to help increase this exciting momentum. In October 2015 in Rome, Italy, the institute will convene a first-of-its kind event – the First International Congress on Postharvest Loss Prevention. A key objective will be to form a high-level, cross-sector coalition focused on reducing losses.

The Congress is being co-organized with strong support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Bank Group, and others.

We invite you to join us on October 4-7, 2015 for this important event. More information and registration is now available at the Congress website. Abstracts are now being accepted, specifically for the themes: postharvest loss status & emerging issues, intervention strategies for PHL mitigation, measurement methods & metrics of PHL, education platform and decision support system. The deadline for full consideration is April 20th, 2015, and can be submitted here.

I would like to find out if there are opportunities for one to get sponsorship to attend this conference. I am a young lecturer at a local university, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and I teach post harvest physiology and handling of horticultural crops. I am so interested to attend to this very important congress which I know shall add value to the knowledge and that shall help me to impart in many other students in my country, Malawi. However, I can not manage to pay for registration, transport, accommodation, food and any other incidentals. Please, how can you help me?
