Study Guides for Entrance Exams

Students are strongly encouraged to study and thoroughly prepare for the entrance exams. Failing one or more sections of the entrance exams may delay the sequencing of required academic coursework and thus slow down the progression to degree completion, in particular the DMA. Registration is required, so please make sure you register for the exams no later than July 31, 2018. Click here to register.

If you are a current University of Illinois Graduate Music Student continuing to a new degree program (i.e. MM to DMA), and you have previously completed the entrance exams, you have met the entrance requirements; you are exempt from taking the entrance exams.

Final Transcripts

All new graduate students must submit original, final transcripts to Music Admissions as soon as possible. The final transcript must display the degree name and conferral date. Students who do not submit final transcripts from previously attended institutions will have a hold placed on their account and will be blocked from registering for the Spring term.

Please submit final transcripts to:
Dr. Angela Tammen
Music Admissions
1114 West Nevada Street
Urbana, IL 61801 USA

Transcript Audits

All new graduate students (except Music Education) will be evaluated by transcript review for Foreign Language entrance requirements.  Audits must be completed and emailed to Music-Acad-Affairs@illinois.edu no later than July 20, 2018.

Music History, Music Theory, and Aural Skills proficiency will be determined by exam; see chart above for testing dates, times, and locations.

Music Education students do not complete Transcript Audits or Entrance Exams.

Students Holding an Assistantship

Students who are first-time Teaching Assistants at the University of Illinois must attend the Graduate Academy for College Teaching programs hosted by the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning. The dates of these events are: Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21, plus a Microteaching session on Wednesday, August 22 or Thursday, August 23. The School of Music will register all new Teaching Assistants for this academy; however, students will select a Microteaching session during the Graduate Academy. We encourage you to select a Microteaching session on Wednesday, August 22, due to our entrance exams and orientation schedule. Click here for a copy of the program.
