All new graduate students (except Music Education and Artist Diploma) will be evaluated by transcript review for Foreign Language entrance requirements. Audits must be completed and emailed to Music-Acad-Affairs@illinois.edu no later than July 1, 2017.

Study Guides for Entrance Exams
- Tuesday, August 22 – Musicology
- Wednesday, August 23 – Music Theory and Score Reading
- Thursday, August 24 – Aural Skills
Students are strongly encouraged to study and thoroughly prepare for the entrance exams. Failing one or more section of the entrance exams may delay the sequencing of required academic coursework and thus slow down the progression to degree completion, in particular the DMA. Registration is required, so please make sure you register for the exams no later than July 31, 2017. Click here to register for the entrance exams.
If you are a current University of Illinois Graduate Music Student continuing to a new degree program (i.e. MM to DMA), and you have previously completed the entrance exams, you have met the entrance requirements; you are exempt from taking the entrance exams.

Students Holding an Assistantship
Students who are first-time Teaching Assistants at the University of Illinois must attend the Graduate Academy for College Teaching programs hosted by the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning. The dates of these events are: Monday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 22, plus a Microteaching session on Wednesday, August 23 or Thursday, August 24. The School of Music will register all new Teaching Assistants for this academy; however, students will select a Microteaching session during the Graduate Academy. We encourage you to select a Microteaching session on Wednesday, August 23, due to our entrance exams and orientation schedule. Click here for a copy of the program.
ISSS New International Graduate Student Orientation Fall 2017
Orientation Session 1: August 17-18
Orientation Session 2: August 21-23
ISSS is pleased to offer two Orientation Sessions for international graduate students this year, thanks to our wonderful colleagues who will be presenting. Orientation is not mandatory but it is strongly recommended for new international graduate students. Individual presentations will provide important information on topics such as immigration status, financial services, life as a college student, career planning and employment eligibility for F-1 and J-1 visa holders. Because some ISSS presentations occur at the same as academic/department orientations or meetings and academics come first, students are encouraged to attend mandatory academic orientation and meetings and attend as much of the ISSS Orientation as possible.
How are the two Sessions different? The presentations within each Session are the same! The main differences are the times and locations. Orientation Session 1 occurs 2 weeks before classes start. Because there are not as many events happening this week, Session 1 is mainly during the day. Orientation Session 2 occurs the week before classes start. Session 2 starts late afternoon and continues through early evening and occurs over 3 days. Students can choose to attend one or the other Session, or they can mix and match presentations from each Session according to their schedule. If they are attending the Graduate Academy for College Teaching, we recommend they attend Orientation Session 1 (August 17-18), as the dates for Orientation Session 2 (August 21-23) might conflict with the Graduate Academy for College Teaching schedule.
You can view the session schedules and presentation descriptions here: http://isss.illinois.edu/students/incoming/orientation/grad_orientation.html.
Registration is encouraged: https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/521786.
If you have questions, please contact ISSS at email@example.com.
