ASM Undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate Funding

ASM Undergraduate Research Capstone Program

To enhance the professional development skills of students after their research experiences and provide the resources to transition to disciplinary scientific meetings.

Deadline: January 20, 2016

Eligible candidates: undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students

  • Receive up to $1,500 in travel support to the ASM Research Capstone Institute and ASM Microbe Meeting (if abstract is accepted)
  • Participate in the ASM Research Capstone Institute (professional development and presentation techniques training) prior to presenting research at the ASM Microbe Meeting
  • Present research at the ASM Microbe Meeting
  • Receive recognition in ASM publications

Application:

  1. Complete the Capstone application
  2. Submit an abstract directly to the ASM

ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

To provide undergraduate students (pursuing graduate careers in microbiology) the opportunity to conduct full time research at their home institutions with an ASM member and present research results at the ASM Microbe Meeting the following year.

Deadline: February 1, 2016

Eligible candidates: undergraduate students only (Note: seniors may apply if they are not graduating in May/June 2016. If they are completing their studies throughout the fall semester. As long as the student is classified as an undergraduate student during the summer months, they are qualified.)

  • Earn up to $4,000 in student stipend
  • Receive up to $1,000 in travel support to the ASM Microbe Meeting (if abstract is accepted)
  • Participate in the ASM Research Capstone Institute (professional development and presentation techniques training) prior to presenting research at the ASM Microbe Meeting
  • Present research at the ASM Microbe Meeting
  • Receive recognition in ASM publications
  • Each applicant must be an ASM member to qualify for the award. Students may apply for membership while completing the application.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

The ASPET-Sponsored SURF program is for undergraduate students interested in biomedical research. The program runs for 10 weeks between June 1 and August 9, 2016. Students will work on their own research project in the lab of their faculty mentor and attend relevant laboratory safety training. Students will also attend seminars and present their research in various forums. An opportunity to visit Hospira R&D campus and learn about careers in the pharmaceutical industry will also be offered. Students will tour UIC research facilities and participate in workshops on advanced scientific techniques. Participants will receive $3,000 for the 10 weeks.

Eligibility:

  • Sophomores or juniors majoring in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related field.
  • GPA of 3.2 or higher on 4.0 scale
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Application Process:

  • Submit full application as a single pdf document by 2/1/16
  • Request that your reference(s) submit the letter of recommendations by 2/1/16
  • Full application consists of 4 components:
    • Application form
    • Personal statement
    • Transcripts
    • Two letter of recommendations

Jenner Family Summer Research Internship

The School of Molecular and Cellular Biology has received a generous donation from Dr. Kris Jenner and his family of Annapolis, Maryland to fund premier awards providing $5,000 toward a summer research stipend (to be paid hourly) for undergraduate MCB and Biochemistry majors to provide the basis for a Senior Research Thesis in MCB or Biochemistry.
