The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is the largest, professional conference for minority students, including those with disabilities and US military veterans, encouraging them to pursue advanced training in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year ABRCMS will be held in Tampa, Florida on November 9-12.
ABRCMS is currently accepting abstract submissions and applications for the student travel awards. MCB undergrads, please consider applying if you are interested! The application deadline is August 26, 2016.
Erik Reed, an MCB PhD alum, is filling the role of Site Microbiologist at AstraZeneca’s Frederick Manufacturing Facility in Frederick, MD. He is looking for a junior/senior microbiology (or MCB) major to work as a simmer intern (anticipated June 7th start date), who understands bacterial physiology and ecology.
The company will pay for housing and a salary. Aseptic technique would also help as there is a likely opportunity to participate in some biofilm focused lab work.

Dr. Steven Blanke’s lab (Department of Microbiology) is currently seeking an undergraduate student to work on a project which investigates the mechanism by which Helicobacter pylori manipulates host metabolism and immune response in order to survive in the harsh gastric environment.
Interested students should be in their Sophomore/Junior year and must be able to work summers. Research experience is preferred but not necessary. The student will be involved in laboratory meetings/discussion and SERIOUS time commitment is required. The student will be trained to perform many different techniques relating to molecular and cellular biology and he or she will also be taught the science and rationale behind the experiments.

The School of MCB is excited to announce two NEW certificate programs for our students.
MCB Certificate in Microbiology
The Certificate in Microbiology option allows MCB undergraduate majors to receive recognition for completing coursework providing a foundational understanding of the discipline of microbiology at multiple levels and from multiple perspectives. Students completing the Certificate will be presented with an official certificate document and will be free to use this credential on a CV/resume or application for advanced study.
For completion of the Certificate in Microbiology, students must meet with an MCB advisor and then opt in by completing the online declaration form no later than the 10th day of their final semester. Certificate students must complete a total of at least 11 credit hours of coursework from the Approved List of Courses. One lecture course of 3 credit hours and one microbiology-focused laboratory course of at least 2 credit hours are required specifically. The remaining credit hours may come from any of the other courses on the Approved List. Students are strongly encouraged to select a diverse set of courses (e.g., one in microbial physiology or biochemistry and one in pathogenesis) with at least one that includes discussions of primary literature.
Note: All of these courses may also count toward the 15 credit hours of advanced MCB courses required for MCB majors.
MCB Certificate in Neuroscience
The Certificate in Neuroscience option allows MCB undergraduate majors to obtain recognition for completing coursework providing a foundational understanding of brain function at multiple levels of organization. Students completing the Certificate will be presented with an official certificate document and will be free to use this credential on a CV/resume or application for advanced study.
Students must opt in to the Certificate of Neuroscience by meeting with an MCB advisors and then completing the declaration form no later than the 10th day of their last semester. Twelve hours of coursework in Neuroscience is required for completion of the certificate. Courses must be chosen from the Certificate in Neuroscience Approved List of Courses. Two courses are required specifically (MCB 461 and MCB 462). The remaining 6 hours can come from any courses on the Approved List. Up to 3 hours may come from MCB 290 undergraduate research conducted in the laboratory of a Neuroscience Program (NSP) faculty member.
The Blanke Laboratory
is seeking a talented undergraduate to conduct research. This position is time demanding with high expectations, and is best suited for an undergraduate interested in pursing graduate school (either a masters or PhD), preferentially in microbiology or cell biology. It is also ideal for a student planning to graduate in the spring of 2017. However, students pursing other careers or are graduating later than 2017 are certainly welcome to apply and will be considered.
The research project a student will investigate in this position is the molecular pathogenesis of infectious disease. Specifically, the mechanisms that a bacterial toxin from the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori uses to target the mitochondria, and the host cell response to toxin mediated mitochondrial damage. The experience will provide students with the skills necessary to plan and perform experiments, collect and interpret data, and present results to others. Laboratory skills that the student will potentially practice (depending on the exact nature of the project) include standard molecular biology techniques, bacterial culturing, protein purification, biochemical analytical procedures, animal work/histological analyses, microscopy, and working in cell culture based systems. Depending on the exact direction of the project, a student may choose to pursue other methodologies as well.
