2017 EMT-Basic Course Through Illini EMS

Become a leader in the healthcare field by learning life-saving knowledge and skills in the spring 2017 EMT-Basic course through Illini EMS! Learn to take charge in medical emergencies and gain hands-on experience with real patients in the emergency room and out in the Champaign-Urbana community. Our EMT-B course will challenge students to shift from passive bystanders to active healthcare professionals. Over the course of the spring 2017 semester you will learn:

·         Treatment of cardiac arrest beyond CPR

·         In-depth pre-hospital treatment of heart attacks, strokes, respiratory disease, diabetes, emergency childbirth, allergic reactions, psychiatric emergencies, and much more

·         Management of shock, hemorrhage, and a variety of traumatic injuries

·         Pharmacological interventions

·         Medical terminology

·         Patient assessment and the interpretation of a patient’s vital signs

Our course prepares students for the National Registry Exam, certifying them as an EMT-B. Our mix of classroom training, online material, and clinical exposure provides our students a strong foundation for a future in healthcare. EMT Class Spring Semester (Illini Medical Services)

Interested in getting a jumpstart on your health career? Learn how to respond during medical emergencies including how to assess and treat cardiac and respiratory arrest, strokes, diabetic emergencies, musculoskeletal injuries, traumatic injuries, burns, emergency child birth, as well as legal and ethical considerations in healthcare by becoming a licensed Emergency Medical Technician. Taking the course through Illini Emergency Medical Services (IEMS), a Registered Student Organization on campus, will prepare you to take the National Registry examination and upon passing, you will be licensed to practice in the State of Illinois. 90% of students who take the course with IEMS pass the National Registry examination on their first attempt, compared to 70% of students across the State of Illinois. Students have gone on to use their license to achieve experience in the healthcare field by volunteering with agencies such as IEMS and working for ambulance services and hospitals.

Class will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7:00 – 10:00 pm (location TBA). There will be four practical sessions held throughout the semester on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from approximately 6:00 – 10:00 pm. The course is now being offered in a new hybrid version, and students will be expected to complete lectures and homework assignments out of class. The course fee is $450 and will be charged to your student account upon acceptance into the class.
