Summer Internship Opportunity at The Career Center

Type of Position:

Summer Internship:    Summer Internship: May 16th – August 5th, 2016

Approximately 20-25 hours weekly from 8-10 am and/or 12 pm – 5 pm, Monday – Friday

 Description:

The Career Center (TCC) is seeking two energetic and customer oriented summer interns for 2016. The Career Center is the primary point of contact for all students regarding professional development. The internship focuses on providing direct contact to thousands of incoming students and parents while working alongside TCC staff in designing and creating best outreach methods for current students. The intern will have the ability to work on both small and large projects as well as receive ongoing personalized, professional development help from TCC staff.

 General Duties:

  • Provide assistance to visitors in The Career Resource Center
  • Assist students by providing one-on-one resume and cover letter critiques
  • Complete various projects as assigned by The Career Center staff

 Specific Duties:

  • Present The Career Centers services and resources to all incoming students and parents during Summer Orientation Resource Fair.
  • Provide assistance to visitors in The Career Center as the primary point of contact during the lunch hour.
  • Interact directly with customers by telephone, email and face to face.
  • Create a new career based “Bulletin Board” for use in the residence halls.
  • Design and develop innovative methods to reach students.
  • Meet regularly with supervising Assistant Director of Academic & Campus Outreach.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the TCC staff.

 Qualifications:

Interns must have outstanding customer service skills. Candidates must be energetic and willing to work with TCC staff, students, parents, and others as necessary. He/she must have strong verbal and written communication skills.  These positions require strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a collaborative environment.  Interns must be able to use Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.  Strong candidates will have experience presenting career based services and resources.

Compensation:

$8.75 hourly

Health Professions Information Sessions

Interested in pursuing a career in the health professions? The career center will be offering information sessions that will cover the basics to help you get started strong on your journey to a career in healthcare (dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistant, public health, veterinary medicine). All sessions will be held 12:00 – 1:00pm in The Interview Suite (616 E. Green, STE 213, Champaign) during the following dates:

  • Wednesday, August 26
  • Wednesday, September 2 with UIUC College of Nursing
  • Tuesday, September 8
  • Thursday, October 15
  • Thursday, November 12

 

THE CAREER CENTER SUMMER SERVICES

The Career Center offers the following services during the summer:

  • In-Person/Phone Career Health Advising Appointments: The Career Center Health Advisors are available for career counseling appointments MondayFridayfrom 9am-4:00pm. Appointments can be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance and are available for face-to-face sessions or for phone counseling sessions by calling The Career Center at217-333-0820.
  • Health Drop-Ins: Health drop-in hours will continue to be Tuesdays and Fridays from 1:00-3:00pm. Students are encouraged to visit with a health advisor for any quick pre-health related questions by coming into the office or via phone. Anyone who needs to spend an extended time addressing a question should consider scheduling a pre-health appointment with a health advisor.
  • Personal Statement Reviews: The website link to submit personal statements for review is down. However, you can still submit your essay via email. Include your UIN and which health profession you are pursuing in the body of your email along with your essay attachment (.doc).The Career Center is experiencing a high volume of personal statements at this time.  Please allow 3-5 business days for the return of your essay after submission.

Please note, the following guidelines will be used when reviewing personal statements at The Career Center.

    • Personal statements must be in final draft format in order to be reviewed. Personal statements will only be reviewed once per term.
    • The average turnaround time is 3 business days. However, during peak periods of the application cycle, it may take longer to provide feedback.
    • The Career Center will not edit statements but will provide comments on overall content and ways to strengthen the statement.
  • Resource Center: The Career Center Resource Center will remain open from 8:30am-5:00pm MondayFriday and is open to everyone. The resource center has a variety of books, handouts, and magazines that are available to all students looking for information on internships, graduate school, resumes, jobs, and much more.
