Tessa Oberg Writing Award


The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for the Tessa Oberg Writing Award.  Honoring the life of Tessa Oberg, a graduate of the English Department, the award is open to students who were enrolled in an LAS major either as a freshman, sophomore or junior during the spring 2013 semester and who will continue in LAS for the fall 2013 semester.   Selection for the $500 Tessa Oberg Writing Award for 2013 will be based upon a 3,000 – 5,000 word essay of an analytical and expository nature submitted in response to the prompt included in the application.

1. A completed and signed application
2. The required essay as referenced in the application.

The Dads Association at UIUC


The Dads Association at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has
allocated a portion of its funds generated through Dad’s Association
activities to help fund and aid worthy projects that promote the safety,
guidance, care and well-being of our students attending the University of
Illinois at Urbana Champaign.  Grants in the amount of $500 – $2,000 will
be awarded based on need as determined by the Dads Association. If you are
a recognized student organization, or a not for profit association that
has a project or program requiring financial support and you would like
the Dad’s Association to assist in funding please provide us with the
following information in your proposal

1.  What is the name and nature of your organization or department?

2.  Describe your project or program in as much detail as needed for us to
consider your request.

3.  How much funding do you need?

4.  How does your proposal support the mission of the Dads Association as
stated in the first paragraph?

5.  What other funding sources do you have?

6.  What is your contact information? (Name, position, address, telephone
number, email address.)

All grant proposals should be submitted by May 31, 2013.  To apply fill
out the form located at the following link –  Judging will take place over the
summer. Awards will be granted in September 2013 for the 2013-14 school
year. Winners will be requested to report on their results from the
project by April 30, 2014.

U.S. Student Fulbright Grants Workshop


Attention Juniors and Graduating Seniors!

The National and International Scholarships Program has scheduled a 90-minute workshop focusing on U.S. student Fulbright grants for Thursday, May 2 from 3:30-5:00 in room 66 of the Library (enter down the stairs from Wright Street). Our workshop will include advice from recent Illinois Fulbright recipients. The session is targeted to juniors, graduating seniors, and graduate students who wish to explore opportunities available under a Fulbright and ready materials for the Fulbright Priority Deadline of July 1, 2013.

These scholarships support U.S. citizens for one year of study or research in any country where there is a Fulbright Commission. English teaching programs (some with minimal to no foreign language or teaching experience necessary) also are available. Students must begin working on their applications this summer to apply for funding for study, teaching, or research beginning in fall 2014. General Information regarding the Fulbright
For over 60 years, the federal government-sponsored Fulbright U.S. Student Program has provided future American leaders with an unparalleled opportunity to study, conduct research, and teach in other countries. Fulbright student grants aim to increase mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange while serving as a catalyst for long-term leadership development.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,700 grants annually and currently operates in 140 countries worldwide.  Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships are now available to more than 65 countries. Fulbright grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage and full or partial tuition.

Applicants to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent by the beginning of the grant. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program does not require applicants to be currently enrolled in a college or university. Applications from young professionals interested in an international experience are also encouraged.

Division of General Studies Video Contest

Calling all undergrads!  The Division of General Studies is seeking your creative video submissions.  The winner will receive a $500 gift card to the Illini Union Bookstore.



In August 2013, the Division of General Studies will host a new class of almost 1,700 new undeclared freshmen at a Welcome Days event at Foellinger Auditorium. As part of the program, we plan to feature one or more short, student-made videos promoting the Illinois experience.


Video submissions should:

  • Connect new freshmen to the campus and/or community
  • Illustrate or explain an experience many new freshmen will encounter
  • Make some reference to the undeclared experience at Illinois
  • In some way, relate to one of the elements of the DGS slogan “Explore. Discover. Succeed.”


What do we mean by “an experience many new freshmen might encounter”?

As freshmen, there are many new things to learn and understand. This is your chance to teach someone else what you learned.  You are encouraged to think outside the ordinary, consider meaningful questions, and explore what would be truly helpful to new undeclared students coming to campus. Examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Getting to know your instructors
  • Going to your first class
  • Navigating the dining halls
  • Connect with your advisor
  • Getting good grades
  • Making friends
  • Getting along with your roommate
  • Getting around safely on campus
  • Avoiding the Freshman 15
  • Be creative – come up with your own topic!



  • Generate ideas.  Topics can be anything related to student life, whether academic, social, personal, community-oriented, etc.   You are encouraged to learn more about the DGS experience by visiting


  • Be creative.  Incorporate clever, interesting, unique, or funny elements to your video.  Winning videos will be shared with a large audience of new Illinois freshmen, so think of how you would want to address a topic… as a former freshman on campus, you know your audience!


  • The final video should be 2-4 minutes in length.



  • Submissions will only be accepted from current Illinois undergraduate students.
  • All undergraduate students are eligible to participate; no previous experience with the Division of General Studies is required.
  • Previous video-making experience is not required.
  • Submission deadline is Wednesday, May 1st, at 11:59 p.m.
  • Video submissions will be accepted from individuals or groups.   If a group is selected as the winning entry, the prize will be split evenly between all group members.
  • All submissions, including the winning submission, may be used for future DGS events.



  • Shooting. Stick with the following file formats: AVI, MPEG, MPG, MOV, or WMV.


  • Editing. There is no need to purchase video editing software. Free software should already be installed on your computer or available for download:


  • Movie Maker for Windows 7 or Vista users:



  • iMovie for Mac users:


  • Uploading. Once completed, you will need to upload your video to YouTube.   To become a registered user of the YouTube site, individuals must register for an account and agree to the YouTube site’s Terms of Service.   • Submitting.  By submitting your video to with the email subject line “DGS video contest”, your entry becomes final and you agree that your video may be used for future DGS events . In the body of the message please include the following information:

Chancellor’s Public Engagement Student Fellows Program
This new program provides small grants for Illinois students to partner with an outside entity, such as a school, government or nonprofit agency, to solve a problem or provide a service while utilizing their education and learning. Applications require a signature from a faculty sponsor and community partner. Applications for this inaugural program are due April 5, 2013.

Public Engagement Grant Program
The Office of Public Engagement seeks proposals from faculty, students, and staff to fund community-related projects, scholarly work, creative endeavors, course development, and other activities within the broad framework of public engagement. Grants of up to $20,000 will be made available on a competitive basis. The request for proposals will be available August 26, 2013, and the proposal submission deadline is September 27, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.

University of Michigan Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP)

Designed to help underrepresented students who want to enter doctoral programs prepare to apply to excellent Ph.D. programs in the biomedically-relevant sciences.  We are seeking students who have great potential to succeed in graduate school in the sciences, but for some reason are not quite ready to tackle the combined academic and research challenges of a doctoral program as the next step in their education.  Often we expect these students will have discovered an interest in experimental science late in their undergraduate careers, or even after they graduated, and so have less extensive research experience.  Since most graduate programs in the sciences now consider significant
prior research essential to understanding the rigors of graduate school and a career in science, a year of post-baccalaureate research can make a significant difference in the ability of students to matriculate into and succeed in a graduate program.

Michigan PREP Benefits:

The National and International Scholarships Program


The National and International Scholarships Program will be conducting informational meetings for students who are interesting in obtaining scholarships for the pursuit of prestigious internships, teaching English abroad, or graduate studies or research at world-class institutions.

First and second year students are invited to attend an informational meeting about how to strengthen your candidacy for these opportunities.  All sessions will be held at the Campus Center for Advising and Academic Services, Conference Room 514.

Tuesday, March 26: 4:30-5 p.m. or 5-5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 27: 1:30-2 p.m., 2-2:30 p.m., 3:30-4 p.m. or 4-4:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 28: 1:30-2 p.m., 2-2:30 p.m., 3-3:30 p.m. or 3:30-4 p.m.


The local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will select a qualifying undergraduate student to receive the Ida King Stevens Award. The Ida King Stevens Award is intended to help returning women students complete their education.  The scholarship awards $1000 (500 each semester) toward the recipient’s tuition and fees.  The recipient will be contacted to participate in appropriate AAUW Branch activities.

The recipient must:

1. Be female.
2. Be a resident of the state of Illinois (as defined by the UIUC standard for in-state tuition).
*3. Have experienced an interruption in formal education of at least two years. (See below for explanation)
4. Be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as either as a full-time or part-time student.
5. Have demonstrated financial need (as determined by the FAFSA)
6. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)

* A formal interruption means that the student did not attend school or college for at least 2 years. Here are some examples of aninterruption in formal education:
A student drops out of community college to care for an ailing parent.
A college student has a child and decides to postpone the completion of her degree.
A high school graduate works full-time to save enough money to go to college.
