Pre-Med Fellowship in India

Any undergraduate student who is interested in international community health should know about the Mabelle Arole Fellowship, awarded annually since 2002 through John Snow, Inc (JSI) Research and Training. Candidates must be admitted to medical school to be eligible. If awarded the Fellowship, s/he defers entrance to medical school for one year. Applications are due in mid-January 2018 and finalists are interviewed in early March in Washington, DC (at the candidate’s expense).

The Fellow would depart the US in mid-June 2018 and returns in spring of 2019. The Fellow, who receives $8,000 to cover all expenses, spends 10 months at the Comprehensive Rural Health Project at Jamkhed (in Maharashtra), one of the best examples of how mobilized/empowered communities can significantly improve their health/nutrition status. The Fellowship in 2018-19 will include work at a rural project in Nepal and, in addition to a focus on primary health care, attention will be paid to non-infectious diseases and periodic surgical camps.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity!

Undergraduate student researcher positions open in the laboratory of Dr. Joe Qiao, Comparative Biosciences Department

Qiao lab is seeking freshman and sophomore students currently enrolled in biology-related majors to conduct guided research on homologous recombination and checkpoint pathways in mouse meiosis. We are looking for students who are able to start during the Fall 2017 semester and to continue their work throughout the school years. Specific tasks include genotyping/PCR, mouse husbandry, immunohistology, immunofluorescence, and other molecular and cytological work. Prior laboratory experience is not required.

Candidate requirements:

  • GPA of 3.7 or higher (for sophomores)
  • AP/IB Biology and Chemistry credit (for freshmen)
  • At least 16 hrs/week commitment
  • Multiple semester commitment

The Body Composition and Nutritional Neuroscience (BCNN) laboratory is looking for committed undergraduates who are available to help facilitate ongoing research studies.  The lab, led by Dr. Naiman Khan, is one of few labs worldwide investigating the links between dietary intake, body composition, physical activity level, and cognitive function.  We are looking for detail-oriented, committed, self-driven students to assist with data collection and entry for many multi-year projects.

Information for Pending Graduates Attending the School of MCB Convocation Ceremony


Good News!  We have enough tickets remaining to offer each registrant for the School of MCB Ceremony an additional 1 or 2 tickets.  If you would like to receive 1 or 2 tickets in addition to what you’ve already requested, please fill out this form prior to 10:00 PM on Thursday, May 4.  We will send email confirmations for your total number of tickets by Friday, May 5 at 5:00 PM. Tickets will be available for pick up at a time and place to be announced after Monday May 8. Please watch your email carefully.

Please only request additional tickets if you need them for your guests. Tickets cannot be sold under any circumstance. These are being offered to you free of charge, and we appreciate your help in keeping this process fair.

You should present your receipt when picking up your academic attire. Bronze Tablet students may request their cord at this time, if they did not attend the Bronze Tablet reception in early May. The cord should be worn over your left shoulder.

If you cannot pick up your academic attire at one of the scheduled times, you may arrange for someone else to do so; that person should present your receipt and must pay the rental fee. Rental fees must be paid in full by cash or check only. Checks should be made payable to Herff Jones and have your name, address and phone number printed on the check.

Fall courses for Military-Connected Students

The Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education is offering the following three electives in the fall semester. A description of each course and CRN are below. The courses were designed specifically for military-connected students to assist with their transition and integration at the University of Illinois.

Veterans Leadership Transition (2.0 credits)  CRN 54672

Offered 1st 8-week session of the semester on Tue / Thurs 11a – 12:20p

Having veterans on campus is an honor. The University recognizes the vast experiences and leadership that veterans bring from the military. For some returning veterans, going back to school can present unique challenges. There are many offices on campus and within the community that are designed to see veterans succeed. This course is designed for veterans who are freshman and transfer students to learn about assistive resources, gain practical skills that will support their transition to campus, reflect on their service history and new mission as students, and develop community. Students will engage and complete readings and assignments related to the “Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell. 

Career Development for Military Connected Students (2.0 credits)  CRN 68462

Offered 2nd 8-week session of the semester on Tue / Thurs 11a – 12:20p 

The objective of this course is to introduce military-connected students to the subject of career development and to provide strategies that enable them to land a career and succeed in the workplace. This course provides an overview of the civilian and federal job search process, resources for creating effective resumes and cover letters, interview preparation, job negotiations, professional networking and knowledge of various industries and organizations. Additionally, employee rights and benefits to include retirement programs will be discussed in detail, as well as tips for business-related functions, workplace challenges and situations, making sense of your paycheck, increasing your salary, and the importance of finding a mentor(s) early in your academic career.

The goals of this course are to: 1) continue to guide you through your transition to civilian and college life; 2) identify and examine obstacles, problems, and issues that may be arising during the second half of the semester; and 3) teach and implement adaptive coping and problem-solving strategies for dealing with current and future stressors.


The MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine is offering summer education and research training to outstanding undergraduate students, who are interested in combined DO-PhD training for a career as a physician-scientist are offered an opportunity to conduct research and to be exposed to the excitement of an academic medical environment. The MSUCOM Summer Undergraduate Education and Research Program is a 10-week program that begins May 30, 2017 and will conclude August 4, 2017. Up to six awards will be given to qualified undergraduate applicants each year. The program includes both clinical & laboratory experiences. Students will work in a research laboratory under the guidance of selected faculty members in the biomedical sciences, shadow physician-scientists in a clinical setting, attend seminars emphasizing the intersection of science and medicine, and participate in career development workshops.  Students will work with faculty on an individual basis and as part of a research team. Research teams will include graduate students, post-docs, research scientists, and current DO-PhD students.

Students will be matched based on their interests to a research faculty mentor/laboratory at Michigan State University.  The student will work in the laboratory 10 weeks. All students will be required to make a full-time commitment (at least 40 hours per week) to their research. Students will be required to make a poster presentation at Mid-SURE (Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences) sponsored by Michigan State University and to their fellow SUPER  participants, faculty mentors, and others at the end of the program. 

Students can expect to have “hands on” experience and learn the basic skills necessary to contribute to a research effort; a sample of the techniques a student might learn includes: maintaining cell cultures, electrophoresis, chromatography, immunoassays, animal surgery, electrophysiology and neurochemical assays, and protein and nucleic acid molecular biology.

• Students will receive exposure to the practice of medicine by individual physician mentors; this experience will average 2 weeks per physician.

 • Students will  attend a program on (1) how to apply to MSUCOM medical school  and  MSU graduate programs (2)  information on how to complete their AACOMAS (American Association of

> Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine application service) application  (3) how to succeed in medical school or graduate  school.    Students will also attend weekly research seminars.

 • A “Certificate of Merit” will be awarded to all participants upon completion of the program.

 Each SUPER undergraduate participant will receive $2,500 for the 10-week, full-time research experience.  Accommodations in University Housing will be provided for any student outside of the greater Lansing, East Lansing area. In order to participate in the clinical portion of the program (shadowing in physicians’ clinics) students are required to have their own vehicle for transportation off campus.

Eligibility:  Applications are invited from undergraduate students who are currently in their junior year, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have a minimum of one full semester of research experience. Students who have a GPA of less than 3.5 but have extensive research experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should be involved in research and be interested in graduate and medical education in biomedical sciences leading to a DO-PhD. Eligible students must be US citizens or permanent residents who anticipate graduating with a bachelor’s degree in the biological or physical sciences in the academic year following the summer of planned participation. Graduating seniors are not eligible.

Selection: Selection of students is based on the completed application that asks for a description of academic interests, career goals, and research experiences. Students must state specific scientific interests and any particular research areas or techniques they wish to explore in order to be matched with research faculty. Also required are two letters of recommendation ( from faculty and/or from an advisor) and an unofficial transcript from the student’s undergraduate institution(s). Minority students are encouraged to apply.  Deadline for receipt of all materials in our office is March 31, 2017. Decisions will be made and students notified by April 14, 2017.

Call for Submissions! The Undergraduate Research Journal

The Ethnography of the University Initiative (EUI) at UIUC announced the fourth volume of its undergraduate research journal, Peer Review: The Undergraduate Research Journal. Peer Review is an open-access, digital journal published annually. 

Volume 4 is slated for publication in May 2017.  Their inaugural edition was published in May 2014. The journal publishes research-based articles, posters, and multimedia projects by current and recent undergraduates who participated in EUI-affiliated courses (this may include independent study/thesis coursework), or students in non-EUI-related courses or programs of study whose research engages the university or the “university experience” in a meaningful way. 

They also invite short commentaries and reflections on the EUI research or teaching experience from former EUI-affiliated students and faculty. Click here to read their latest volume!

Submission Process:

(a) Research-based articles or multimedia projects already completed may be submitted in their entirety, to be accompanied by an abstract of 250-300 words that describes your primary argument/s, method/s, and findings. For articles, the suggested word count is 2,000 to 4,000, not including references and bibliography; longer pieces will, however, be considered. Audio or video work should be no longer than 15 minutes run-time.

(b) Research in progress may be submitted as an abstract of 250-300 words that describes your anticipated research focus, method/s, and argument/s.

(c) Commentaries or reflections by previous EUI-affiliated students or faculty should provide (i) for students, the course and semester in which you did your EUI research, (ii) for faculty, your affiliated course and semester, and (iii) for both, a brief paragraph (250-500 words) outlining your experience.

They will accept co-authored work (with faculty or graduate student/s) in which the undergraduate student is the lead author, as well as multi-authored undergraduate work. Student abstracts, articles and multimedia projects must be accompanied by contact information for the faculty mentor or program administrator (such as McNair Scholars, James Scholars, etc.) who is willing to write in support of your submission.
