2000s

  • 2000 – Satellite dining partners open at Krannert Art Museum and the Illini Union Bookstore.
  • 2001 – The Vending Room opens and popcorn and fountain drinks are added to the Quad Shop.
  • 2002 – IUB implements January to January terms.
  • 2003 – IUB’s lecture and entertainment continue to grow, hosting Patch Adams and comedian Jim Gaffigan.
  • 2004 – Edward Slazinik named as Director.
  • 2004 – Illinites begins as a co-sponsorship between IUB and the Resident Hall Association, but they drop out and IUB continues it.
  • 2005 – The first Illini Union Welcome Week is introduced.
  • 2006 – The Illini Union starts the One Book One Campus book programs, with the initial selection of Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenrich.
  • 2006 – IUB hosts a debate with rapper Chuck D and lobbyist Hilary Rosen. Spike Lee visits and speaks at an IUB lecture.
  • 2007 – A record number of Registered Student Organizations were on campus with 1,050.
  • 2007 – Dan Rather comes and lectures on campus, hosted by IUB.
  • 2008 – The Thanksgiving Basket Drive is initiated by OVP.
  • 2009 – The Comedy Show Series by IUB is a success with guests Mindy Kaling and John Oliver, and Amy Schumer also performs in the Courtyard Café.
