1990s

  • 1991 – Illini Union celebrates its 50th anniversary
  • 1991 – Courtyard-specific proposal passes, construction begins, and students continue to pay fees implemented two years prior.
  • 1991 – Bookstore buys all I-Books from IUB to give away for free to complete with other local merchants.
  • 1992 – Plans to combine the Book Exchange and the Illini Union Bookstore into a single stand-alone university bookstore are passed. The Student Organization Complex opens.
  • 1993 – The Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP) opens under the Illini Union.
  • 1994 – The new Courtyard Café opens.
  • 1995 – Renovation on lower level to convert the space from a cafeteria to a food court begins.
  • 1995 – Communications Office (now Marketing) opens in the Illini Union, and the Quad Shop begins operations.
  • 1996 – Multimedia Department is created to keep current with technology.
  • 1997 – Food Court opens with six collaborative partners, including sbarro’s.
  • 1998 – Union installs ATMs in the southeast corner along with a security camera system throughout the entire building.
  • 1999 – Continuing the university’s commitment to accessibility, the north entrance ramp project is completed.
