3rd Huixian International Forum on Earthquake Engineering for Young Researchers

Save the dates: August 11-12, 2017.  The 3rd Huixian International Forum on Earthquake Engineering for Young Researchers will be hosted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  The deadline for abstract submission is February 28, 2017.  More information will be coming in the near future.  Abstract submission deadline extended to March 31, 2017 April 15, 2017.

NHERI Experimental Facility Workshop at Lehigh University

Lehigh University’s NHERI Experimental Facility will be hosting a 1 and ½-day Research Workshop on Monday, December 5th and Tuesday, December 6th at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. The NSF-sponsored event is entitled: Researchers Workshop: Advanced Simulation for Natural Hazards Mitigation.

The objectives of the workshop are:

  1. to disseminate information on the use of the NHERI Lehigh Experimental Facility (EF) to conduct state-of-the-art research in natural hazards mitigation;
  2. provide a platform to disseminate knowledge on the recent advances in the field;
  3. identify the grand challenges and the role of the NHERI program in addressing these challenges;
  4. facilitate sharing of ideas and research collaboration among the workshop participants; and,
  5. identify and develop opportunities to utilize the NHERI Lehigh EF.

As part of this workshop, Prof. Fahnestock will discuss full-scale braced frame testing conducted at Lehigh University, which was part of the project NEESR: Reserve Capacity in New and Existing Low-Ductility Steel Braced Frames, and the program includes speakers from University of California San Diego, Morgan State University, University of Washington, Lehigh University, Western Michigan University, Maffei Structural Engineering, University of Arizona, Notre Dame and National Science Foundation.

Partial travel financial support for on-site participants is available on a limited basis. Participants interested in receiving travel support will need to apply for this support in the workshop registration form on DesignSafe-CI. The deadline to apply for travel support is November 21st. Questions regarding the site workshop can be addressed to Dr. Chad Kusko, Administrative Director, ATLSS Engineering Research Center, Lehigh University at chk205@lehigh.edu or 610-758-5299.

2017 SSRC Annual Stability Conference Call for Papers

Abstracts are now being accepted for the 2017 SSRC Annual Stability Conference, March 21-24, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. Researchers are encouraged to submit an abstract summarizing ongoing or recently completed research on stability of metal structures, or metal-concrete composite structures.

Click here for detailed information on submitting an abstract.

Click here to submit your abstract and complete the online form.

Abstracts are due by 5:00 pm (CDT) on August 5, 2016. This due date is firm and no late submissions will be accepted due to the tight schedule required for the final program.

The program Committee will make the final program selections based on the applicability of the subject, and evaluation of the abstract, available space in the program, and assurance that the author will attend the conference to present his/her paper. Notification of acceptance will be made the week of August 22, 2016. Full papers must be submitted by December 19, 2016.

For more information or questions about submitting abstracts, contact Janet Cummins, ssrc@aisc.org or (312) 670-7015.

AISC Educator Workshop

For the third straight year, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) will host a free workshop for educators, designed for those who are new to teaching structural steel design. The workshop will be held Monday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 19 in downtown Chicago. Topics include designing a steel course, textbooks, creating a lecture series, teaching structural steel behavior and stability, teaching case studies, and group discussions. To learn more about this free workshop and how AISC will subsidize your costs for attending, visit www.aisc.org/eduworkshop. Apply to attend today!

Fahnestock Receives AISC Special Achievement Award

Fourteen leaders from across the structural steel design, construction, and academic community will receive distinguished awards from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) at the 2016 NASCC: The Steel Conference (April 13-15 in Orlando). Prof. Fahnestock is being recognized for his work on the reserve capacity of low-ductility steel braced frames in areas of moderate seismicity, in which he quantifies the effects of reserve capacity in non-ductile frames, which may preclude the need for strict seismic retrofit requirements in moderate seismic regions.

Fahnestock to Participate in Lehigh Sesquicentennial Celebration

On April 1 and 2, 2016, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh University will celebrate the Lehigh sesquicentennial with a series of events looking at the future of civil and environmental engineering and the university’s key role in that future. Prof. Fahnestock, who received MS and PhD degrees from Lehigh, will participate in a panel on “The Future of Civil and Environmental Engineering Education.”

Joint 6AESE and 11ANCRiSST

The 6th International Conference on Advances in Experimental Structural Engineering (6AESE) and the 11th International Workshop on Advanced Smart Materials and Smart Structures Technology (11ANCRiSST) will be held jointly on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on August 1-2, 2015. This event, which will be co-chaired by Prof. Billie Spencer and Prof. Larry Fahnestock, provides a unique opportunity for collaborative discussions to support advances in a broad range of structural engineering topics. The abstract submission deadlines is March 31, 2015, and contributions from researchers and practitioners are encouraged.
