The Mediterranean Sea has captured the imagination of scholars and other people for a very long time. Recently it has topped the news in the US and internationally, either because of the refugee crisis or because of the armed conflicts that plague the region. This course examines the governments, societies and cultures on the shores of the Mediterranean. It is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the social sciences and the humanities, who are interested in interdisciplinary study. Therefore the course challenges students to think outside the boundaries of their respective majors and specialties. A team of scholars from the University of Illinois, with backgrounds in a range of disciplines, has been assembled to assist with this effort. During the semester we will examine ideas associated with the Mediterranean and practices followed by its people and governments from the perspectives of a variety of disciplines, including political science, history, the classics, economics, anthropology, sociology, archaeology and architecture. Taken together, these various perspectives paint a comprehensive and multi-faceted picture of a very diverse geographic area and its people. In this exploration, we will pay special attention to the role of the European Union as a catalyst for modern developments and as a prism through which to examine past events in this part of the world. The course is supported with a generous Jean Monnet grant from the European Commission.

An interdisciplinary course designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The course is taught by a team of faculty from a wide range of disciplines (History, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics, etc.). It presents Europe and the Mediterranean as interdependent, multicultural
and multinational spaces historically connected by cultural, economic and migratory
networks. It pays special attention to the role of the European Union and its policies in
the Mediterranean. By exploring these economic, social and cultural bridges, the course
introduces students to the complexities of an area too often represented in terms of
mere opposition to the West. The course is a Jean Monnet Module, funded in part by the
European Union.
