2021-2022 Junior Quinn Award Winner
The Creative Writing Program is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2021-2022 Junior Quinn Award is Akira Ritos. Please send your congratulations!
The Junior Quinn Award recognizes achievement and potential in Creative Writing majors and minors with junior class standing by awarding financial support to attend a writing workshop or conference.
The faculty judges were impressed by the tight prose and sense of purpose in Akira’s piece “Katawan.” The Creative Writing program has no doubt Akira will make great use of the Quinn winnings (Quinnings?!) to continue to develop an already distinct talent.
scholarship application deadline approaching
The deadline for English department scholarship applications is coming up on Friday, March 11.
As a reminder, the Department of English offers numerous merit scholarships totaling more than $100,000 in an annual competition in the spring. These scholarships recognize and reward outstanding achievements by English, Creative Writing, or Teaching of English students. See the website for more details.

If you haven’t yet checked in with the folks at the Humanities Professional Resource Center (HPRC), please do so! You can start a conversation with them at any time (the earlier the better), and you don’t need to wait until you have answers to the questions you think they might ask you (such as “what do you want to do after you graduate?”). It’s fine to start with “I don’t know” and work from there!
To make things easy, schedule an in-person advising appointment with Anna on Thursday morning. You’ll have a private appointment in the HPRC conference room (105 Greg Hall) and then you can stick around to talk to Julie about career planning. It’s one-stop shopping!

Chaya Sandler, advisor for the Business Minor for Non-Majors, will be hosting two information sessions about the Business minor program: March 24th at 10 am on Zoom and March 30th at 4pm in BIF 1041. For more information, email Chaya at csandle2@illinois.edu.

Students will develop/improve writing skills particularly germane to successfully applying for an internship, a post-baccalaureate job, or an advanced-degree program. They will then apply those skills to create a polished set of recruiter-ready texts relevant to their career plans and a career-relevant, currently-advertised job/internship/program.

Undergraduate Admissions- Summer I STAR Position
Admissions is looking to hire current undergraduate students to serve as I STARs (Illinois Student Admission Representatives) within the Office of Undergraduate Admissions-Campus Visits. They are looking for students who are articulate, reliable, energetic, and are enthusiastic about Illinois. The main function of an I STAR is to serve as a representative at Illinois and to give tours to prospective students and families visiting campus. I STARs also assist in the logistics of running our on-campus visit programs.

The Office of Undergraduate Research announces its Spring 2022 workshop calendar. Information for each workshop including how students can register can be found here . For all workshops, OUR will be offering both virtual and in-person dates. Participation is by advance registration only; there are a limited number of spots available for each workshop, so please sign up as soon as possible. Workshops will be added throughout the term based on demand.

grants supporting research and travel
Research Support Grant (RSG) Research Support Grant (RSG) This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks (i.e., winter break and summer terms, NOT regular semester living expenses), and materials or other ancillary costs. We hope that this competition will both broaden and deepen the types of research being conducted by undergraduate students on campus, and that the recipients are able to use this opportunity as a way of engaging with their fields. During this three-hour workshop, we will learn about (1) the historical development of racism through capitalism, (2) the influence of White supremacy in community service, and (3) explore anti-racist practices from the perspective of Black liberation so that we can practice being an upstander with service-learning case studies.
