2021-2022 las scholarship application open:

To be eligible for an LAS Scholarship, you must be a continuing undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Illinois, planning to continue full-time enrollment in the 2021-22 academic year (students graduating in December 2021 may still apply). Additional eligibility criteria is listed for each scholarship in the application.

Social Media Management Internship, Department of English (2021-2022):

For the 21-22 academic year, the Department of English is looking to hire three Social Media Management Interns: one Creative Writing major and two from any major in the English Department. In response to COVID safety precautions, this position is eligible for remote work.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop creative thematic post series for Facebook and Instagram
  • Promote, attend, and create social media posts about department events when safety allows
  • Design flyers, memes, and other posts for informing and entertaining students
  • Develop creative semester-long multimodal projects
  • Attend weekly meetings for brainstorming, task assignments, and collaboration
  • Edit videos and design flyers or posts
  • Conduct and publish interviews with faculty, alumni, students, and visiting speakers
  • Collaborate with Advising Office in creating content for the Advising Blog

Average hours worked per week: 5 (about 75 hours over a semester)

Position Wage: $11/hour

Position Starts: August 23

Spring Creative Writing Awards Ceremony and Reading:

The creative writing program will be celebrating its Spring contest winners with an event later this month. It will recognize all of its winners and feature short readings by those who received the top prize in each category.

Unpaid Internship Scholarships Available for U of I Students:

Are you interested in an unpaid internship but are concerned about the financial hardship it may cause? The Fred S. Bailey Unpaid Internship Scholarship Program offers academic scholarships to undergraduate students at the University of Illinois who will complete an unpaid internship with a public service agency or not-for-profit organization. Awards are $1,000 for a part-time internship or $2,500 for a full-time internship and are given directly to the student. All undergraduate students regardless of academic program or citizenship status are encouraged to apply. Application Deadline: April 30, 2021.

Academic Tip of the Week:

If you are planning to change majors for Fall 2021 or later, please note that Spring 2021 courses used to satisfy Curricular Declaration Criteria must be taken for a letter grade, not Pass COVID/No Pass COVID (PZ/NZ). Contact a college advisor if you have questions. Also, the class schedule for Fall 2021 opens this week. If a course says “location pending” it means the classroom will be assigned at a later date.

Art Space: Creative Coping for Self-Care:

It’s 2021, and we’re still dealing with stress and the Big Sad. Looking for ways to deal? Dust off those paints, grab that old clarinet, or get back into broody poetry. Once a week, drop in to make some time for creativity and use the arts to cope. All skill levels are welcome. The Zoom link and password can be found here. Students Invited to Join Vaccine Study:

Illinois students who have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19 can enroll in a study to help understand the effectiveness of vaccines in reducing the spread of the coronavirus. Participants will be paid and will receive the vaccine. Students interested in participating can sign up here or email here for more information.

Connect the Dots During SAAM 2021:

Join the Women’s Resources Center this April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) as we dive into the intersection of sexual violence and racism. This year’s events will highlight the activism of folx of color and how racial discrimination contributes to the prevalence of sexual violence and impacts healing. Virtual Internships with Companies in Brazil:

Campus B offers internship programs where students work within an international organization on projects, with a dedicated supervisor and a program coordinator based in Brazil. The deadline to apply for fall internships is Tuesday, June 15.

Quarantine Comedy:

Join comedian Amer Zahr, writer of “Being Palestinian Makes Me Smile” and creator of the documentary “We’re Not White,” for an evening of Quarantine Comedy and a discussion on Amer Zahr’s experience growing up Arab and learning the Arabic language and culture.
