Study Abroad in Ecuador This Summer with GLBL 298

Global Studies 298: Education and Development: A Case Study in Ecuador

TOPIC: Course focuses on education as a factor in human and national development. Using Ecuador as a case study, we consider primary and secondary education achievement and the role of non-governmental organizations in the education sector. We work with an NGO to provide a summer enrichment opportunity for children in a small, lower income community. We read about and discuss what it means to be a global
citizen and critically reflect on our impact in the community and the community’s impact on us.

SERVICE PROJECTS: Our group creates and conducts a month-long summer enrichment experience in ‘global studies’ – offering modules on ESL, Environmental Science, Sports & Wellness, and Arts & Cultures around the World. (Students receive instruction in teaching methods and strategies). Campers range in age
from 5-15, with older ones serving as ‘leaders’ to support our student instructors. We also help in a community garden.

EXCURSIONS: On weekends, we travel around the country to experience first-hand the tremendous cultural and natural diversity that Ecuador offers.

STUDENT LIFE: We live with families in the small community of Lumbisi, which is also where we do our service projects. Spanish is not required for this program, but even minimal knowledge is highly recommended. Lumbisi is close to urban communities and about 45 minutes from the center of Quito.

Estimated total cost: $3,396
Program fee is $2,921 and includes round-trip airfare Chicago-Quito, housing, meals, program excursions, and international insurance. Extra costs NOT included in the program fee include books (est. $75) and personal expenses (est. $400).
$500 scholarships are provided for all LAS students and Education
students also get $500 from COE. Please see your college for
more information.

2013 Study Abroad Opportunity: International Sustainable Ag in Brazil

May 11-25, 2013

What are you doing the Summer?

Brazil’s agriculture has undergone rapid industrialization. Just like in the US, Brazilian commodity farmers are forced to deal with rising costs of inputs, increasing dependence on chemicals and large equipment, falling prices and degraded resources. In short, the same issues and principles of sustainability that are found everywhere.
In ACES 298, you will study the many issues of sustainability in an international setting. You will start on an organic coffee farm, meet Brazilian farmers striving to protect their farms and communities while increasing their profits growing a variety of crops. You’ll stay in a sustainable community and learn about permaculture, holistic living and local food. And you will explore a variety of different ecosystems you can’t find in Illinois.
