SPECIAL Section of SPAN 228/Heritage Speakers

In order to respond to the specific educational needs of Spanish heritage speakers, SIP is offering a designated section of Spanish Composition this spring.

Fully online course for Spanish/English bilingual students who grew up speaking/hearing Spanish at home. This course will give students the opportunity to build upon their existing linguistic and cultural knowledge and will help them to develop their academic writing skills in Spanish. Students will be able to improve their control of grammar and written expression (including spelling) through weekly online assignments as well as essays and journals. Topics discussed will be related to Hispanics in the US (immigration, bilingualism, etc.).

Through conceptual development and context-sensitive lessons/assignments, students will: [1] develop/improve writing skills particularly germane to successfully applying for an internship, a post-baccalaureate job, or an advanced-degree program and [2] apply those skills to create a polished set of recruiter-ready texts relevant to their career plans and a career-relevant, currently-advertised job/internship/program. Attending regularly-scheduled, online class meetings is expected of all students because: learning how to successfully apply writing concepts is a skill, and such skills are acquired through “enactive” experiences.

Are you looking for a graduate program that combines a strong academic curriculum, real-­‐ world experience with Spanish speakers, clinical practicum and the opportunity for community outreach?

 If so, then the Indiana University Speech Therapy Education, Practicum, and Services for Latino Children and Families (STEPS) program in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences is a great program for you!

As part of the M.A. in Speech and Hearing Sciences, our program offers unique academic courses about communication in bilingual populations and specific coursework about Spanish-­‐English language development and disorders. In addition, students will deliver speech-­‐language pathology clinical services to mono-­‐ and bilingual Spanish speakers, both in our clinic and in real-­‐world settings, under the supervision of an experienced bilingual speech-­‐language pathologist. Speech-­‐language services can include helping children learn to talk, training individuals with disabilities to produce speech sounds, helping victims of stroke or traumatic brain injury, working with individuals with autism, and much more! The opportunity to participate in the delivery of parent training and professional development seminars, as well as collaboration with area agencies is also available. This blend of experiences is unparalleled in the Midwest!

EIU: MS in Counseling @ U of I Grad Fair

EIU’s MS in Counseling program will be attending the Graduate School Fair at U of I on October 16.  The program offers a 60-hour Master’s program in Counseling, with concentrations in either Clinical or School Counseling which leads to licensure as an Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or as a certified school counselor. We encourage all students to come and talk with our Department Chair, Richard Roberts, PhD., while he is at U of I and can answer all of your questions about our program!

Sesali Bowen is a published writer, trainer, and advocate for Black girls everywhere. A Chicago South Side native, she has combined her first-hand experience as an “around the way girl” with a hip hop feminist, reproductive, and social justice framework to inform, share, and build knowledge about identity politics and the intersections of lived experiences. She received her bachelor’s in Women’s and Gender studies from DePaul University (after transferring from the University of Illinois Urbana -Champaign). Currently, she works as the Training Director at the United States Student Association and blogs for Feministing.com.

Global Studies 8 Week Course

LAS Global Studies is offering a new course for the second 8-weeks of the Fall Semester (10/19-12/11) This is a writing workshop for students who have studied abroad. All majors welcome.

First Person Global (GLBL 199) with Professor Carol Spindel

This is a writing workshop for students who have studied abroad and want to deepen their understanding of globalization by writing about their own experiences. Writing in the first person raises fundamental questions about identity, power, cultural understanding, and representation. In this class we challenge ourselves to chronicle our global encounters in ethical, thoughtful, and creative ways. We read and discuss narrative nonfiction and personal essays by contemporary writers and we write to have it all — vivid characters, true stories, accurate information, perceptive ideas, and robust language. (1 credit hour)
