Direct Action Organizing Training

Saturday, October 26th 10am-2pm

Murphy Lounge, University YMCA

(1001 S. Wright St., Champaign)

RSVP HERE

We’ve all heard the saying: “be the change you want to see.” But they never talk about the hardcore planning and power analysis that’s required to bring about that change. Facilitated by writer and advocate Sesali Bowen, this training will help identify practical issues, targets, and allies; in addition to mapping out a winnable strategy to win victories. Come learn some of the basic principles of direct actions, grassroots organizing and change the way you meet adversity!  Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP at go.illinois.edu/DirectAction

This training is co-sponsored by Diversity & Social Justice Education, Department of Gender & Women’s Studies, and the University YMCA, and paid for in part by the Student Cultural Programming Fee. For more information, contact DiversityEd@illinois.edu

Trainer Bio

Sesali Bowen is a published writer, trainer, and advocate for Black girls everywhere. A Chicago South Side native, she has combined her first-hand experience as an “around the way girl” with a hip hop feminist, reproductive, and social justice framework to inform, share, and build knowledge about identity politics and the intersections of lived experiences. She received her bachelor’s in Women’s and Gender studies from DePaul University (after transferring from the University of Illinois Urbana -Champaign). Currently, she works as the Training Director at the United States Student Association and blogs for Feministing.com.
