Students at the University of Illinois are Anything But Typical.

Marginalization is something that is present and still exists today on the University of Illinois’ campus. Students of different backgrounds are all impacted by this marginalization on a daily basis. Sometimes, these struggles do not make their school experience easy. However, these invisible issues make each person unique in their own way, and ultimately, this shapes them into what we define as an “a-typical” student.

The Diverse Voices of UIUC

Diversity is an issue that is growing in importance to the world as a whole, and also more specifically, to college campus. Diversity, being the tricky subject that it is, is one of much debate and speculation. Across the campus at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, efforts are, and have been, ongoing that aim to increase diversity, as well as embrace the already existent diversity. With over 44,000 Undergraduate students, everyone finds a community where they fit in on the University of Illinois campus. But from segregation in the Greek system, to students speaking out of their experiences with microaggressions in the community, race sadly still plays a factor. Our team of Kara Garvey, Camille Avilez, Fangyi Liu, and Jimmie Jackson took a look at race relations at the University of Illinois.

There are over 30,000 undergraduate students that attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Suddenly a small world seems a little bigger. It becomes even larger when noted that, of these students, over 4,000 travel from over 110 foreign countries to unify themselves with a campus full of multiple majors and opportunities. While Illinois claims to be the “the most diverse public university in the Big Ten” on its admissions website, according to statistics found on Forbes.com, the university’s student population, while quite diverse, isn’t as varied as a prospective student would be led to believe. We Are One: Inclusion Inside and Outside the Classroom

The University of Illinois strives to be a diverse, inclusive institution and is focused on being innovative in hiring diverse leaders all while developing an inclusive campus climate. This includes both individual and collective commitment in order to obtain the highest amount of success. The campus is hard at work to try and implement a more diverse faculty pool. Other goals include assisting underrepresented students in order to help them develop high academic achievements.
