Principal Investigator
Marianne Winslett is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois and the director of ADSC. Before joining UIUC, she worked for Bell Labs. Her research interests lie in information security and in the management of scientific data. She is currently on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on the Web and ACM Transactions on Information and System Security. She served as SIGMOD vice chair from 2001-5, and was on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Database Systems from 1994-2004 and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering from 1994-8. She is an ACM Fellow, and She received a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1989. She received my PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1987.
Co-Principal Investigators in the Original Proposal
Edison Liu is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at A*STAR’s GIS. His earlier work focused on the discovery of kinases involved in cancer biology and in molecular clinical epidemiology. During this period, he discovered and investigated a new class of receptor tyrosine kinases (AXL) involved in invasion and metastases, and determined the importance of HER2 in modulating breast cancer response to specific forms of adjuvant chemotherapy. Since 1998, hisscientific research has focused on the functional genomics of human cancers investigating the dynamics of gene regulation on a genome scale that modulates cancer biology. He has explored the expression signatures in breast cancers that define biochemical and genetic perturbations. From this point, he has pursued the transcriptional regulation by estrogen receptor on a genomic scale. Collectively, his work spans cancer biology, genomics, human genetics, and molecular epidemiology.
See-Kiong Ng (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University), a recipient of the prestigious Singapore National Computer Board’s (now the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore) overseas scholarship (1986), is currently the Head of the Data Mining Department at Institute for Infocomm Research. He is also an Associate Professor at the new Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). See-Kiong’s current research focuses on unraveling the underlying functional mechanisms of protein interaction networks as well as other real-world networks. His continuing and emerging diverse and cross-disciplinary research interests include Bioinformatics, Text Mining, Social Network Mining, and Privacy-Preserving Data Mining.
E Shyong Tai is an Associate Professor with the Dept of Medicine and the Dept of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in the National University of Singapore, as well as the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School. He works primarily in the area of metabolic diseases such as obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. He is interested in the causes and consequences of these disorders. These include the effects of these disorders on the eye.
Xiaokui Xiao is a Nanyang Assisitant Professor (NAP) at the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He obtained a PhD in Computer Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008. Before joining NTU in 2009, He was a postdoctoral associate at the Cornell University. He is part of the DANTE research group at NTU.
New Co-Principal Investigators
Shuguo Han is a Scientist I at the Data Mining Department of Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR, Singapore. He received his Bachelors degree (with honors) and Ph.D. degree from School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in year 2005 and year 2010 respectively. His research interests include privacy/security issues in data mining/publishing/sharing, machine learning and cryptography technologies. He has published various top data mining conference/journal papers, including ACM SIGKDD, SIAM SDM, IEEE TKDE, IEEE ICDE, etc. Currently, he is working as a key member on privacy/security issues of several industry/research projects.
Anbupalam “Anbu” Thalamuthu is a Senior Research Scientist at the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS). His current research interests are on the development of non-parametric and parametric methods for testing trait-maker associations based on multilocus genotypes/haplotypes. Using such methods he is interested to analyze several markers within a genetic pathway. He is also considering alternative approaches to analyze the genes within a pathway using gene based association tests. His long term interests are on the development methods to identify interacting genes in several biological pathways.
Jianjun Liu is a Senior Group Leader at the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS). His current research focus is to understand which and how genetic variants influence disease development, including breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia.
Collaborators
Nikita Borisov is a cryptographer and computer security researcher, currently an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His notable work includes one of the first cryptanalyses of the WEP wireless encryption protocol together with Ian Goldberg and David Wagner, and the design of the Off-the-Record Messaging protocol with Goldberg. Borisov received a B. Math in computer science and pure math in 1997 from the University of Waterloo. He received an M.S. and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002 and 2005, respectively.
Jiawei Han is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been working on research into data mining, data warehousing, database systems, data mining from spatiotemporal data, multimedia data, stream and RFID data, social network data, and biological data, with over 350 journal and conference publications. He has chaired or served in over 100 program committees of international conferences and workshops, including PC co-chair of 2005 (IEEE) International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM), Americas Coordinator of 2006 International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB), and senior PC member for 2008 ACM SIGKDD Int. Conf. on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. He is also serving as the founding Editor-In-Chief of ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data. He is an ACM Fellow and has received 2004 ACM SIGKDD Innovations Award and 2005 IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award. His book “Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques” (2nd ed., Morgan Kaufmann, 2006) has been popularly used as a textbook worldwide.
Research Staff
Yin “David” Yang is a Research Scientist at ADSC, and at the same time a Principal Research Affiliate at the Coordinated Science Laboratory, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA. His research interests lie in database security and query optimization. He has published several papers in renowned venues about query authentication in outsourced databases. In addition, he has designed efficient query processing methods in various contexts, including data streams, relational keyword search, spatial databases, web portals, and wireless sensor networks.
Zhenjie Zhang received his Ph.D. in computer science from the School of Computing, National University of Singapore, in 2010. Before that, he graduated with a B.S. degree from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Fudan University, in 2004. He was visiting student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2008 and a visiting student at AT&T Shannon Lab in 2009. Before joining the Advanced Digital Sciences Center in October 2010, he worked as a Research Assistant and Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore from 2008 to 2010. His research interests cover a variety of different topics, including clustering analysis, non-metric indexing, game theory, and data privacy. He has published more than 20 research papers in database and data mining venues, including SIGMOD, VLDB, and ICML. He has served as a Program Committee member for WWW 2010, VLDB 2010, KDD 2010, and ICDE 2012. He was the recipient of the NUS President’s Graduate Fellowship in 2007.
Research Interns
Razvan Iordach and Andreea Tudor currently work as research interns at ADSC. They are both master students in University Politehnica of Buchurest. They are now working on applying the differential privacy technology developed by the ADSC team to real medical studies.
Alumni
Yang “Daniel” Li worked as a software engineer at ADSC from March 2011 to May 2012. He is mainly interested in theoretical computer science. Daniel is going to enroll as a PhD student at University of Washington in Fall 2012. His future supervisor is Dan Suciu.
Shangfu Peng worked as a research intern at ADSC from August 2011 to January 2012. He is an undergraduate student of the ACM honored class of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since Fall 2012, Shangfu has been studying towards a PhD degree at University of Maryland.
Ganzhao Yuan worked as a research intern at ADSC from December 2011 to March 2012. Ganzhao received his B. E. from Tianjin Polytechnic University. He is currently a PhD student in School of Computer Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology.
Ioana Dumitrache worked as a research intern at ADSC during April to June 2012. She is currently a master student in Romania.
