Zach Sell is a PhD candidate in the History Department who is completing his dissertation “Slavery Beyond Slavery: The American South, British Imperialism, and the Circuits of Capital, 1833–1873.” “Slavery Beyond Slavery” builds upon W.E.B. Du Bois’s insight that the U.S. slave plantation corresponded with the factory in its “worst conceivable form” to consider the variety of ways that U.S. slavery intensified and transformed the exploitation of labor on a global scale and especially within the British Empire. His research, writing, and teaching are about the messy relationships between race, empire, and capitalism.
