Biography

Kyle Carmack is a graduate student studying Musicology and Ethnomusicology. His work and interests include music and violence, music and labor, cultural exchange and the Silk Road, cultural preservation initiatives, Hindu/Muslim relations, cosmopolitanism, and nationalism. His fieldwork and research are primarily in South Asia and India, and will focus on the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the Indian Himalayas. Kyle also studies the sitar under Ustad Shahid Parvez and Seema Gulati from the Etawah Gharana. He is the past recipient of teaching fellowships on campus, and has served on the Provost and Graduate College Student Advisory Board, the Provost Tuition Advisory Committee, the School of Music Advisory Board, the Student Organization Resource Fee Board, the University Student Life Committee, and is the current president of the Illinois Student Association of Music Scholars (ISAMS).
