Organizations must develop and implement numerous strategies to identify, protect, and secure valuable business information assets and information technology systems. Internal security teams often rely on vendors, consultants, and other external resources to provide some of the information to help with the development cyber-security strategies. In the early 2000’s, a few members of the oil & gas sector believed that there would be value in sharing with and learning from other industry members. This discussion describes four cyber-security collaborations established in the oil & gas sector along with a summary of the value derived by participating companies. Also included is a discussion describing some “lessons learned” (by the presenter) during his participation in the collaborations.
About the speaker: Richard Jackson is the retired General Manager of Information Risk Management for Chevron Corporation, one of the world’s largest Fortune 500 companies. His primary role was ensuring that the company’s diverse and global IT infrastructure complied with regulations and standards. He was also responsible for the identification and management of risks relative to Chevron’s business information and information technology assets.
His expertise in data privacy, records retention management, information technology intellectual property rights management, IT Forensics & process controls security compliance led to Rich becoming a sought after industry speaker and advisor on IT Security best practices. He has appeared at many industry conferences and shows receiving recognition for his contributions to the industry thus far. Richard is a contributing writer to the “Wiley Handbook of Science & Technology for Homeland Security,” offering a critical guide to scientific research that supports global counterterrorism efforts as well as a recipient of Information Security Magazine’s 2005 Security 7 Award.
Early in his career, Rich held many management positions in Chevron’s Marketing organization including McDonald’s Alliance, Global Aviation Fuel Sales, Lubricants National Account Sales and Plant Manager in Lubricants Manufacturing and Distribution Center. His experience of InfoSec in the oil and gas industry has earned him prestigious awards including ISE Luminary Leadership Award Winner in 2011, Visionary Award by Symantec Corporation in 2007 and ISE North America Executive Award Finalist in 2006. He is also a co-recipient of the DHS Undersecretary’s award for collaboration.
He is a founding member of the Executive Committee of the United States Dept. of Homeland Security-sponsored Project Logiic Consortium. Rich formerly served as Chairperson of the American Petroleum Institute’s Information Technology Security Forum and Executive Director of the FBI’s San Francisco Bay Area Infra-Gard Chapter.
Rich earned a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Howard University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University.
